This week Transpower NZ, the owner and operator of the National Grid, completed work to realign their 110 kV transmission line to make way for the upgrade of the Southern Motorway at Takanini.
Transpower has repositioned and installed a 37.5 metre monopole to clear the way for NZ Transport Agency’s Southern Corridor Improvements project.
Transpower Project Manager Glenn West said Transpower often works with infrastructure companies and stakeholders on projects that deliver wider benefits to New Zealanders.
“It’s important to us that we work collaboratively with other agencies to deliver their projects, while maintaining a reliable security of supply of electricity,” he said.
The 110 kV Bombay-Otahuhu transmission line is an important power supply line for Auckland and the work was completed without a disruption to consumers.
The Transport Agency’s Auckland Highway Manager, Brett Gliddon says Transpower has done a great job to move the power lines safely and efficiently so that the SH1 motorway upgrade can move ahead.
“This allows us to get on with work on the Takanini Interchange to provide a new freight lane and ramps which will mean better traffic flow, easier access to the motorway as well as improving safety for all road users.”
“The Southern Corridor Improvements project will create extra lanes and ease the existing bottlenecks to help provide more consistent journey times through this route.”
The old steel tower being replaced, has now been removed.
