Overnight works to SH1 Penrose Bridge underpass next weekend

|

Drivers travelling on State Highway 1 in Auckland can expect to see road crews carrying out essential repairs to the Penrose Bridge underpass overnight next Friday 23 February.

There will be a full southbound closure from Ellerslie interchange to Mt Wellington interchange on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 February between 10pm and 6am, with Sunday 25 February as a contingency.

The Penrose Road overbridge, from Great South Road to Portman Road, will also be closed at the same time.

While the bridge poses no immediate risk to motorists, crews will remove an obsolete piece of steel before it becomes an issue. The piece sits over two southbound lanes and has experienced repeated impact caused by over height vehicles travelling under the bridge.

Each time a vehicle hits the bridge our team carry out a thorough inspection and assessment to make sure it is still safe to drive under.

There is a possibility that the Penrose Road overbridge will also be closed on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 February between 6am and 10pm.

SH1 southbound lanes will be closed from Ellerslie interchange to Mt Wellington Highway. The following ramps will be closed:

  • Ellerslie Panmure Highway southbound on-ramp
  • Southeastern Highway southbound off-ramp
  • South Eastern Highway link southbound to Airport/Onehunga
  • Mt Wellington Highway southbound off-ramp.

Recommended detour:

  • Please use the recommended detour via Great South Road, Sylvia Park Road and Mt Wellington Highway
  • For those travelling to Onehunga or the Airport (SH20) follow the detour along Great South Road, and turn right at the South Eastern Highway then follow airport signage along Church Street and Neilson Street.

There will also be a full closure in both directions from Great South Road to Portman Road (including the Penrose Road overbridge).

Recommended detour:

  • Motorists travelling westbound: Please use the recommended detour via Gavin Street, Wilkinson Road to Ellerslie Panmure roundabout. You will exit and continue on the detour from Great South Link to Great South Road
  • Motorists travelling eastbound: Please use the recommended detour via Great South Road, South Eastern Highway, Carbine Road and Waipuna Road.

This work is weather dependent. If the weekend forecast is heavy rain we will reschedule for the next available weekend.
