The NZ Transport Agency says work will start next week on the first stage of an upgrade of State Highway 12 through Maungaturoto in south Northland.
The $750,000 project will be split in to three sections
In the main township, there will be improvements to the kerb and to drainage. When this work is completed, the highway will be resurfaced. The surface upgrade will extend from the township west to the Caltex service station and east from Holy Trinity Church to the fire station.
The NZTA expects to have these stages completed by the end of May.
The design of the project’s final section - improvements to drainage and other works from the fire station to the bridge near the Fonterra factory - is still being investigated and this work will be completed in 2014 after the town’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
A 30kph speed restriction will be place during the project.
"We would ask drivers to observe the lower speed limit and any other temporary traffic changes that may be in place for the safety of themselves and their passenger, and for the safety of our contractors working to deliver the improvements," says the NZTA’s Regional Assets Manager, Steve Mutton.
