The NZ Transport Agency says a section of storm-damaged State Highway 10 in Northland has re-opened to two lanes of traffic weeks earlier than planned.
Heavy rain earlier this month caused part of the highway to subside by the Matauri Bay intersection near Kaeo, leaving just one lane for traffic to use.
The NZTA's acting State Highways Manager for Northland, Steve Mutton, says contractors in Northland have done a fantastic job repairing the highway.
"The underslip was so severe we had originally thought repairs would take several weeks, but we're delighted to have both lanes back in use within days because of the tremendous effort made by our contractors on behalf of road users," he says.
Mr Mutton says drivers will still need to drive with care until repairs are completed. The highway has to be sealed, and speed restrictions are in force: 30kph from 7am to 6pm for the safety of contractors still working on site, and 70kph from 6pm to 7am.
