The NZ Transport Agency has awarded the contract to improve the safety of State Highway 10 at Bulls Gorge near Kerikeri in Northland to Transfield Services.
The estimated cost of the project is $7m.
The Bulls Gorge improvements will realign a 1.8km-long section of SH10.
“This project is all about safety to meet the traffic demands of a rapidly growing area,” says the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Northland, Tommy Parker. “The improvements will make this section of SH10 straighter and safer for drivers.”
Mr Parker says Transfield will be required to obtain necessary consents from local authorities to dispose of about 40 percent of the 170-thousand cubic metres of earth to be excavated as part of the improvements to SH10.
Work is due to start in October and be completed in October, 2012. Mr Parker says no earthworks operations will be undertaken during the wet season - 30 April to 1 October.
