The NZ Transport Agency advises drivers that the speed limit on State Highway 1 across the Brynderwyns in Northland will be lowered from 100km/h to 80km/h from tomorrow, Thursday 27 May.
The 80km/h speed limit will in force for almost six kilometres between Waipu Gorge Road on the northern side of the hills to the southern end of the Piroa Stream Bridge adjacent to the quarry...
The NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Northland, Tommy Parker, says the initiative is being introduced to improve safety on a challenging section of highway. Eight people have been killed in crashes on the Brynderwyns in the past five years.
“Because of the winding nature of the highway, lowering the speed limit is not likely to add any significant time to people’s journeys, but it will make their travel a lot safer on a highway that demands their full attention,” Mr Parker said.
The NZTA says it has introduced the 80km/h speed limit with the support and co-operation of the Police in Northland.
Since the NZTA lowered the speed limit to 80km/h on SH1 through the Dome Valley, between Warkworth and Wellsford, in 2007 there has been a significant reduction in crashes on this section of highway.
