Fourteen additional webcams have been commissioned on Auckland's motorway network by the NZ Transport Agency as it expands its traffic information services ahead of the Christmas holidays to give people more detailed information about highway conditions before they travel.
Eleven of the cameras are being installed on the Southwestern Motorway [State Highway 20], two on the Southern Motorway [SH1] and one at the Johnstones Hill Tunnels on the Northern Gateway Toll Road [SH1]. Images from the cameras are updated every 60 seconds. Their locations are:-
Southwestern Motorway [SH20]: Gloucester Park, Onehunga, Rimu Road, Crawford Avenue, Coronation Road, Puhinui Road, Nesdale Road, Plunket Avenue, Lambie Drive, Barrowcliffe Place, Great South Road.
Southern Motorway [SH1]: Goodwood Drive, Rainbows End.
Northern Gateway Toll Road [SH1]: Johnstones Hill tunnels
Camera images can be viewed on the NZTA's Auckland traffic website, http://www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/current-conditions/webcams/auckland/index.phtml(external link) and for all developers on the NZTA's InfoConnect website, https://infoconnect.highwayinfo.govt.nz(external link)
The NZTA's State Highways Manager for Auckland, Tommy Parker, says the additional cameras on the Southwestern Motorway follow the extension of the Western Ring Route with the openings earlier this year of the SH20/1 connection at Manukau, and the additional motorway bridge over the Manukau Harbour.
"As more drivers use the Western Ring Route as an alternative to State Highway 1, web cameras will help them plan their journeys with more accuracy," Mr Parker says.
"All the cameras operating in Auckland deliver an important service to people by giving them the opportunity to avoid congestion and to have smoother and safer trips. The service not only benefits drivers who use the network daily, but also people heading away for their Christmas holiday,” Mr Parker adds.
Fifty webcams now operate in the Auckland region. They also operate in Tauranga, Waiouru, Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch
