NZ Transport Agency Regional Director Jenny Chetwynd has welcomed the Wellington City Council's reconfirmation of support this evening for the Ngauranga to Airport Corridor Plan.
Ms Chetwynd says the Council’s resolution to reconfirm its support for the Plan, which forms a key part of the Regional Land Transport Strategy developed in partnership with Greater Wellington Regional Council and WCC, was an important step towards progressing the multi-modal initiatives embraced in the plan.
"The Ngauranga to Airport Corridor plan, once fully implemented, will result in a well performing multi-modal transport system that improves travel throughout the city for all users.
"It outlines a comprehensive vision to provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, free up road capacity for bus priority lanes and progress other public transport improvements, and relieve congestion on state highways and local roads.
“We're committed to working closely with WCC and GWRC to progress all aspects of the Plan. and deliver a transport system for Wellington that will encourage economic growth and make it easier and safer for people to get around the city. "
Ms Chetwynd stressed that the NZTA had sought confirmation of the council's continued support for the overall Plan and its multi-modal approach, rather than specific endorsement of the design of the proposed improvements to State Highway 1.
"We appreciate that the Council will have views on the specific design details once they are available, and we will welcome their feedback as part of the consultation process."
