New dates for Gisborne asphalting work – detours planned

NZTA is advising drivers of a revised schedule for upcoming overnight road asphalting work on SH35 in Gisborne. Detours will be in place throughout all stages of the work, as detailed below.

The closures will require a combination of stop-go controls and road closures in place. There may also be temporary speed limits in place during opening hours, while crews are partway through completion.

The updated SH35 work programme is as follows:

Stage 1 - SH35 Awapuni Road between Stanley Road and Grey St roundabout  - 29 April to 2 May 

  • Road closure from 7pm to 5am a with detour for light vehicles via Grey St, Salisbury Road, Stanley Road
  • Heavy vehicles and HPMVs heading to the port, should use the approved detour via SH2 Makaraka, Back Ormond Road, Ormond Road and The Esplanade

Stage 2 – SH35 Wainui Road between Matthews Road and Hirini St -3 May to 26 May– 7pm to 5am

  • Matthews Road to Rutene Road – stop/go for all traffic
  • Rutene Road to Hirini St – road closure with detours for light vehicles
  • Heavy vehicles and HPMVs should use approved detour via Rutene Road and the Esplanade if you are heading to the port.

Stage 3 – SH35 Customhouse St between The Cut and Childers Road roundabout – 28 May to 4 June

  • Road closures from 7pm to 5am with detours for light vehicles
  • Heavy vehicles and HPMVs  heading to the port should use the approved detour via SH2 Makaraka, Back Ormond Road, Ormond Road and The Esplanade
  • The detours in place will change as the crews move to various locations of SH35. All detours will be signposted.  

System Manager for Hawke’s Bay / Tairāwhiti Martin Colditz says road users should factor these overnight closures into their journey time and be prepared to follow the signposted detours.
