The NZ Transport Agency will be closing sections of the motorway links to and from Auckland International Airport overnight on four consecutive days starting this Sunday, 17 April.
The closures are associated with work to improve the Walmsley Road on-ramp on the Southwestern Motorway (State Highway 20) at Mangere Bridge.
The closures are timed between 9pm and 5am to coincide with low volumes of traffic, and involve both the Southwestern Motorway and the SH20A link to and from the airport. Detours will be signposted to help drivers including those heading to and from the airport. . Northbound diversion routes are along Kirkbride Rd to the Coronation Rd on-ramp, and southbound to Massey Rd for the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) and to Kirkbride Rd to SH20A.
"While traffic should be light, we would still advise people to give themselves a little extra time for their journeys," says Tom Newson, the NZTA's Project Services Manager Southern Corridor.
Details of the closures for the four nights are:
Sunday 17 April
Monday, 18 April
Tuesday, 19 April
Wednesday, 20 April
The closures are necessary so that contractors can install new motorway gantries, remove temporary barriers and install permanent ones.
The length of the Walmsley Road on ramp is being extended by the NZTA as a safety measure to prevent traffic using it from making quick and potentially dangerous manoeuvres across a busy motorway to reach the lanes for the airport.
