More motorcyclists on lower South Island highways: Burt Monro Challenge underway in Southland

|

The annual Burt Monro motorcyclists’ Challenge has got underway in Invercargill this week and runs through this weekend (9 and 10 February).

“Road users should be ready for extra numbers of motorcyclists on the highways around the South Island through to the end of the weekend and early next week,” says NZ Transport Agency Otago/ Southland Journey Manager Peter Brown.

“Some people may have had an extended Waitangi Day holiday, so traffic may be busy on Sunday in the lower South Island.

“Motorcyclists also need to bear in mind the Transport Agency’s and local councils’ summer repair and resealing season is underway, so everyone needs to be prepared to slow down around road crews and active work sites.

“Yellow no-passing lines and speed limits are there for road users’ protection, so please build in time and enjoy your journeys safely,” says Mr Brown.

State Highway 6 along the West Coast, SH1 through coastal Otago, Canterbury and Southland and other inland highways around the lakes will have more than the usual numbers of motorcyclists this week and after the event.

All road users should be prepared to increase following distances and slow down around motorcyclists for everyone’s safety, says Mr Brown.

Police will be actively patrolling on the major routes around Southland and Otago for an additional safety reminder.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey this summer. Keep up to date with:
