The NZ Transport Agency will resume resurfacing works on the Mackays to Peka Peka (M2PP) Expressway next week, following the suspension of works during winter owing to poor weather.
Until June this year, resurfacing along M2PP had been ongoing for 18 months and over 10 kilometres of the expressway had been resurfaced.
“Warm, dry weather is necessary to complete resurfacing work successfully and ensure the new surface performs well. The weather we experienced through the winter months made it difficult to continue the work,” Transport Agency Acting Senior Manager Project Delivery Kevin Reid says.
“Now that the weather is starting to improve, work will resume on resurfacing the remaining 14.3 kilometres of road.”
Resurfacing work involves removing some of the existing surface layer, applying a new waterproof layer and placing a new Open Graded Porous Asphalt (OGPA) layer on top.
Starting on Monday 30 September, the resurfacing works will be carried out from 4am-7pm, Monday to Friday. While the works are underway, one lane will be closed within the worksite area and the speed limit will be 30 kilometres per hour.
During the evening and when works are not underway, one lane within the worksite area will remain closed and the speed limit will be 70 kilometres per hour.
Works will not take place in the lead up to or during public holidays or long weekends.
From time to time, night works may be necessary when the safety of staff or road users is a concern. The Transport Agency will communicate in advance of any planned night works.
The work is expected to be completed by early 2020.
