Lower North Island/Upper South Island - Planned state highway roadworks

Important information for drivers.

Lower North Island

• Resurfacing is planned on Wednesday and Thursday nights for the SH2/Dixon Street roundabout in Masterton, and five nights of planned road maintenance closures start on State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill from this Sunday. Dates for planned closures on the route for the second half of the year are now confirmed.

• Monthly maintenance closures for the Wellington urban State Highway 1 Tunnels will be done next week. The Arras Tunnel will be closed on Sunday night, the Terrace Tunnel on Monday night, and the Mount Victoria Tunnel on Tuesday night. Closures will be in place between  9 pm and 4 am each night. Drivers will have to use alternative routes when travelling in and out of the Wellington CBD.
  • SH1 tunnel closures

• Resurfacing work is planned for State Highway 1 Cobham Drive and Calabar Drive in mid-April.
  • Maintenance works coming for State Highway 1 Kilbirnie/Miramar

• Wellington Water has confirmed its traffic management plans for its Western Sewer Rehabilitation Project next month. Work is expected to take place 24/7 for two weeks from  12 April. Traffic management will be in place from Melling Link and Kennedy Good Bridge. One northbound lane will be closed and speed limits will be reduced.

• KiwiRail will also be completing infrastructure upgrades on its network in April during the school, Easter, and ANZAC holidays, which will affect passenger and public transport services. More details about this work and its impact can be found on the Metlink website:

Top of the South Island

• Road reconstruction work  on State Highway 6 at Pelorus continues until mid-April.
  • UPDATE: State Highway summer maintenance continues in Marlborough (SH6 Pelorus works extended)

• Resilience works continue at Higgins Bluff, near Murchison, on the Shenandoah Highway,  and State Highway 6 at Dellows Bluff will return two lanes at the slip site next week

  • State Highway 6 Dellows Bluff – containers to be removed

Note: Road works are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
