Lower North Island/Upper South Island - planned state highway roadworks

|

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (23 April 2023).

Anzac Day Holiday Advice

With the Anzac Day holiday happening on Tuesday, 25 April, drivers need to be aware many Dawn Services and commemorative events are occurring across the region. Travellers need to be aware some of these will require road closures and/or traffic management (events are listed in the schedule below).

Where possible, projects and maintenance work aren’t done on public holidays. But there will be some areas on the state highway network where holiday drivers can expect delays. Congestion and delays are likely today and Tuesday on State Highway 1, Otaki to Levin, and State Highway 2, Remutaka Hill.

Road users should factor holiday traffic into their travel plans and allow a little extra time to get where they are going. Take care on the roads, make sure you get to your destination safely, and check road conditions before you go.

Other important information for road users

  • Bad weather will affect the region’s roads this weekend. The Metservice has warnings and watches in place for the Lower North Island and upper South Island. People must drive to the conditions, and be prepared for hazards such as slips, localised flooding, and treefalls. For holiday travellers with ferry connections, make sure you factor in extra travel time and check road conditions before your journey.

Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. If bad weather should strike, work will be postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
