Lower North Island/Upper South Island - Planned state highway roadworks

Important information for drivers.

Lower North Island:

• The Mount Victoria Tunnel will be closed between 9 pm and 4 am Monday to Thursday nights next week for its annual Build Warrant of Fitness inspection.

• On Sunday night, from midnight to 4 am (Monday morning), State Highway 2 will be closed in Upper Hutt between Moonshine Road and Whakatiki Street. This is fror safety barrier repairs. Local road detours will be available  through Upper Hutt, but will require extra travel time.
• The WeetBix Kids Tryathlon Event is on in Wellington on Sunday. Drivers heading to and from Haitaitai/Kilbirnie and Miramar can expect lane closures for this event on Wellington Road and Cobham Drive between 5 am and 3 pm

• During the April school holidays Wellington Water will be working on a sewer main that runs under State Highway 2 in the Hutt Valley. This repair is expected to take around two weeks (24/7) to complete and will affect traffic with a lane closure on the highway expected. More information can be found on the Wellington Water website:

Top of the South Island:

• Bridge inspections are underway across the top of the South Island

• Road rebuilding continues at State Highway 6 near Pelorus until 21 March, and Marlborough drivers are  urged to take extra care on the region’s roads with the grape harvesting season underway.

• A closure is planned for Wednesday night (19 March) on State Highway 6, between Kohatu and Belgrove for resurfacing works on the Doctor Creek Bridge, and resilience works continue under stop/go  at Higgins Bluff on the Shenandoah Highway (SH65)

• Drivers heading to the West Coast next week will need to allow extra time with road works planned for State Highway 6 Lower Buller Gorge.

• Line marking is also planned for State Highway 6 Hope Saddle on Sunday and Monday nights between 9 pm and 5 am (finishes 5 am Tuesday). Because the highway is narrow over the Hope Saddle, this work will be done under 30-minute stop/stop traffic management to ensure the safety of road crews and drivers. After each 30-minutes of line marking work, the highway will reopen to clear queued traffic. Drivers should expect 30-minute delays while this work is underway.
