Lower North Island/Upper South Island - Planned state highway roadworks

Important information for drivers.

Lower North Island:

  • The Mount Victoria Tunnel will be closed between 9 pm and 4 am Monday to Thursday nights next week for its annual Build Warrant of Fitness inspection.
  • Keeping Wellington Tunnels in tip-top shape – SH1 Mount Victoria Tunnel inspection next week(external link)
  • On Sunday night, from midnight to 4 am (Monday morning), State Highway 2 will be closed in Upper Hutt between Moonshine Road and Whakatiki Street. This is fror safety barrier repairs. Local road detours will be available  through Upper Hutt, but will require extra travel time.
  • The WeetBix Kids Tryathlon Event is on in Wellington on Sunday. Drivers heading to and from Haitaitai/Kilbirnie and Miramar can expect lane closures for this event on Wellington Road and Cobham Drive between 5 am and 3 pm

  • During the April school holidays Wellington Water will be working on a sewer main that runs under State Highway 2 in the Hutt Valley. This repair is expected to take around two weeks (24/7) to complete and will affect traffic with a lane closure on the highway expected. More information can be found on the Wellington Water website:
