Lower North Island drivers, be ready for thunderstorms

|

People on the roads in the lower North Island need to be ready for hazardous driving conditions.

The Metservice has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Taumarunui, Taupo, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Taihape, Wanganui, Manawatu, Tararua, Kapiti-Horowhenua, Wairarapa, and Wellington. The warning is in effect until 9 pm tonight.

It is warning of the potential for localised downpours that could cause flash flooding.

All road users must be alert to the risk and drive accordingly.

Drive to the conditions, watch your following distances, and avoid sudden braking on wet roads. If visibility is poor, ensure your headlights are on so other road users can see you.

Check weather and road conditions before you travel.
