An information centre is about to open to give road users and residents ready access to the latest updates on the MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway project. The project is part of the Wellington Northern Corridor road of national significance which runs from Levin to Wellington Airport.
The centre at Coastlands Mall, Paraparaumu, will be open from Friday (July 30) for seven days a week, and will allow members of the public to get up-to-date information, as well as discuss project issues directly with a project team member.
The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) central regional director, Jenny Chetwynd, says displays at the centre will provide visual information about the Wellington Northern Corridor and the expressway.
“The expressway will bring a wide range of economic and transport benefits to local and regional communities,” Ms Chetwynd says.
“These include encouraging economic growth and productivity, reducing severe congestion and improving safety on State Highway One.
Ms Chetwynd says “opening the information centre is an important step toward ensuring the community is kept up to date with progress on the project”.
NZTA selected a consortium last month to deliver the expressway, with preliminary work underway that will provide an indicative timetable of when the investigation, design and construction phases are likely to happen.
The Wellington Northern Corridor route from Levin to Wellington Airport, is one of seven roads of national significance projects identified by the Government and due to be substantially completed within the next 10 years.
