Icy road risk remains in the south

|

The Transport Agency says the icy grip on Southland and Otago roads over the last three days shows no immediate signs of easing, and drivers need exercise extra caution when driving in these conditions.

Journey Manager Graeme Hall says travel was disrupted again this morning in Otago and Southland due to the cold conditions freezing roads.  This created difficulties for motorists with a number of minor crashes. Our contractors are working hard to ensure the highway network is  as safe as possible, in what are trying conditions.

“As they did last night our contractors will be on the roads from early hours of the morning trying to keep roads operating safely, but it is difficult to be everywhere with such a large network to cover.”

Graeme Hall says it is likely there will be more ice about tomorrow and drivers need to be prepared for these conditions. One of the keys to keeping safe, is treating all roads as though they could be slippery, avoid sudden braking, keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front and reducing speed.
