Green light for final sets of Thames Street traffic lights

|

The final four sets of new traffic lights in the Thames Street Safety Project in Oamaru will be switched on tomorrow, Wednesday 22 April.

The final four sets of new traffic lights in the Thames Street Safety Project in Oamaru will be switched on tomorrow, Wednesday 22 April.

This $3.2 million project is to reduce the number and severity of crashes on the section of Thames Street from Orwell St to just south of Coquet St. The crash rate in this area is much higher than expected for this type of urban state highway.

The first of the traffic lights at the Eden-Thames St intersection were activated last month. Project Manager Simon Underwood says the lights being activated tomorrow are at Thames-Severn Coquet Streets, Ribble-Thames, Usk-Thames and Ouse Thames intersections.

Mr Underwood says that with all 5 new traffic lights operating there should be a marked improvement in traffic flows and pedestrian safety along Thames St between Orwell and Coquet streets”.
