Forgotten World Highway reopens following slip

|

State Highway 43 Forgotten World Highway has reopened this afternoon (at 3pm) following a slip through Tangarākau Gorge on Wednesday.

The slip occurred where crews have been carrying out drilling to build a retaining wall in the gorge as part of the sealing project.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Regional Manager of Infrastructure Delivery, Rob Partridge, says the area has now been backfilled and an assessment has determined the stretch of road is safe to reopen.

“We want to thank motorists for their patience over the past couple of days waiting for the gorge to reopen.”

Work on the sealing project and retaining wall construction through the gorge will resume as normal from Monday.

Road closures have been in place through the gorge Monday to Friday between 9am – 12pm and 1pm - 3pm for sealing and retaining wall works since January.
