Fire closes inland road to Kaikōura – Route 70, between Mt Lyford and Waiau - 12.30pm update

|

A fire has closed the inland road to Kaikōura this morning (Route 70), between Waiau and Mt Lyford.

Police and Fire are advising people to delay their journeys until the situation improves and the road is able to be safely reopened.

Hot and dry nor-west wind conditions are continuing today in Canterbury.

The NZ Transport Agency is advising all road users and residents to be aware of the raised fire risk and avoid any activities which could spark a fire.

Route 70 is the only alternative route into Kaikōura, outside State Highway 1 to the north and south of the town.
