Expect changes during Whangarei intersection upgrade

The NZ Transport Agency is advising drivers to plan their journey through Whangarei with the final stage of the upgrade of State Highway 1 getting underway next week.

Contractors will start work next Monday, 16 March, on a two-week programme of work between Wilson Avenue and Fourth Avenue.

“We’re looking forward to completing another of the improvement projects in Whangarei and providing the community with safer and easier access through the city,” says the Transport Agency’s Acting Auckland and Northland Highway Manager Mieszko Iwaskow.

The final phase of work will temporarily change access to the area:

• From Monday 16 March, a new limited use link road will join Fourth Avenue with Kauika Road West.
• From Monday 16 March until the end of March, access to and from Western Hills Drive and Fourth Avenue will be closed.
• From Monday 30 March, access to and from Western Hills Drive and Fourth Avenue will be open for left-in and left-out traffic only.

“We’re mindful this may mean some extra travel time and we appreciate the ongoing support from the Whangarei community while we successfully deliver the remaining works,” Mr Iwaskow says.

The five upgrade projects – Tarewa Road intersection, SH1/14 intersection, Wilson Avenue to Fourth Avenue intersection, Selwyn Avenue to Fourth Avenue intersection and Kensington Avenue to Manse Street – will help manage growing traffic volumes, improve safety and make travel easier for locals, visitors, pedestrians, cyclists, goods and freight travelling in and around Whangarei.
