Motorists travelling southbound on the Southern Motorway [SH1] are warned to expect delays as the NZ Transport Agency tries to complete repair work early on the Orams Road overbridge at Manurewa.
From tonight Wednesday, 28 October, repair work on the bridge will begin at 7pm – two hours earlier than originally scheduled, this will mean the motorway is down to one lane southbound.
To ensure traffic does not get congested, the Redoubt Road southbound on ramp will be closed between 7pm – 10pm from Saturday to Wednesday, and 8pm – 10pm on Thursday.
“Our priority it to try and re-connect the communities and businesses affected by the closure of the bridge as quickly as we can,” said the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Tommy Parker.
Repairs were expected to take up to eight weeks after the bridge was badly damaged last month when he was hit by the boom of a digger being towed on the Southern Motorway.
“We hope that with the earlier starting time, we can now reduce that time,” Mr Parker said.
However, the earlier start will have an impact on motorists driving south on the Southern Motorway. The NZTA urges them to allow more time for their journeys because the motorway around the Orams Road overbridge will be restricted to one lane for a longer period and there will be significant delays.
“We apologise for any delays caused by an accident we had no control over, and we would urge drivers to plan their journeys so that any disruption is kept to a minimum,” added Mr Parker.
Repair crews will be on site from 7pm to 5.30am, with the exception of Sunday when work finishes at 8am. They work on the bridge from Saturday to Thursday nights.
