Drive with care overnight

|

The message is clear – please drive with care overnight, following a day of heavy rainfall around Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti.

Crews are closely monitoring the state highway network across both regions to assess for any signs of surface flooding or damage caused by the heavy rainfall.

As at 7.30PM, state highways around both regions remain open, however caution is advised for road users travelling the network overnight.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi System Manager Martin Colditz says the rain has been heavy and persistent and as a result, temporary speed restrictions have been put in place.

A temporary speed restriction of 30 km/h is in place due to surface flooding on State Highway 2 at Whirinaki and on State Highway 5 in Eskdale.

On State Highway 50, at Tikokino and at Waiohiki, road users are being advised to drive with caution because of flooding in those areas.

“The rain is expected to continue overnight and we would advise people to avoid travelling overnight, but we know for many people, travel is unavoidable. So please drive to the conditions, take your time and get to your destination safely.”

Please continue to check for updates on NZTA’s Journey Planner, in the event of short notice closures overnight, as our crews continue to safely monitor the network.
