Crash closes all northbound lanes, SH1 Bombay to Ramarama – motorists urged to delay travel

UPDATE 9:00pm
NZTA can confirm that one lane southbound is now open on State Highway 1 between Bombay and Ramarama. A temporary 50 km/h speed restriction is in place along this section.

This lane, along with the remaining lanes in both directions will re-close at 10pm to allow crews to install a temporary steel median barrier. All lanes are expected to be reopened by 5am tomorrow morning.

When these lanes are re-closed, motorists heading south will continue to be diverted at Ararimu Road, Ramarama and northbound via Mill Road, Bombay.


4:00pm

All lanes in both directions on State Highway 1 are now closed between Bombay and Ramarama.

Due to significant damage to the wire rope barrier system in both directions, NZTA is advising motorists that SH1 between Bombay and Ramarama will likely remain closed overnight while a temporary steel barrier is put in place.

It is expected all lanes will be reopened by 5am tomorrow morning.         

The below detours remain in place for motorists and people are asked to expect significant delays around the area as we head into evening peak hour.


3:00pm

The below detours are in place:

  • Southbound: Exit at Ararimu off-ramp, Great South Road
  • Northbound: Via Bombay, Great South Road

Lane closures are likely to be in place into this evening. Motorists are urged to delay their travel if possible or expect significant delays.


2:19 pm

All northbound lanes on State Highway 1 between Bombay and Ramarama are currently closed due to a significant crash.

Lane closures are likely to be in place into this evening. Motorists are urged to delay their travel if possible or expect significant delays.

The right southbound lane is also blocked and people are asked to pass with extra care and expect delays.

A full southbound closure may also be necessary so motorists are asked to follow directions of response crews at the scene.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi recommends that people delay their travel if possible, avoid the area and use another route.
