Community bands together for Pukerua Bay planting project

The NZ Transport Agency is to work with the Pukerua Bay Residents Association and the local school to replant on the seaward side of SH1at Pukerua Bay.

The replanting is to be undertaken in late August - as part of a project to strengthen the retaining wall on Pukerua Bay Hill.

The old stormwater culvert at the SH1 site between Wairaka Road and Pukerua Bay Beach Road has been upgraded, and earthworks are nearing completion, says NZTA state highway manager, Wellington, Rob Whight.

Large soil nails are currently being inserted into the bank at the strengthened retaining wall, and this work is expected to be finished by October, Mr Whight says.

The strengthening project is designed to provide route security for road users, while also upgrading the shared pedestrian and cycle path.

Mr Whight says the work at this site, and another SH1stretch just north of Onepu Road, has enabled the width of the footpath to be increased to 2.5metres wide, with protective fencing and barriers on either side.  The upgraded path is expected to be completed by September.

Meanwhile the community project to replant the hillside nearest the village is scheduled for August 28.

The residents association is providing new plants, which will be funded by NZTA and planted out by the students from Pukerua Bay School.  This community-spirited event will include a barbecue hosted by NZTA.

Mr Whight says NZTA thanks the community for its involvement and cooperation.
