Caution needed on roads as wet weather and strong winds hit central New Zealand

|

Drivers are encouraged to take care on the roads as strong winds and heavy rain are set to affect the Lower North Island and Upper South Island.

The Metservice has multiple weather warnings in place. A heavy rain watch is in place for Nelson and Golden Bay/Takaka, while a heavy rain warning has been issued for the Tararua ranges. There are also strong wind watches in place for Wellington, Marlborough, and Nelson.

Slips, rockfalls, fallen trees and other hazards can all be expected on the highway network. Drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorcycles should also exercise caution in exposed areas, such as State Highway 2 over the Remutaka Hill.

Road crews are on standby to deal with any events that may arise. Drivers should be prepared for delays and check road conditions before they travel.
