Bad weather continues to affect the top of the South Island – state highway update

|

Bad weather continues to affect the top of the South Island, with heavy rain warnings in place until this evening.

Update 10.20am

Waka Kotahi is urging drivers to take extreme care on the roads as heavy rain closes highways across the top of the South Island.

State Highway 60:

  • State Highway 60 in Tākaka is closed by flooding at the Waitapu Bridge. With no detours available, this means there is no access between Tākaka and Collingwood.
  • Localised flooding and slips are affecting the highway at multiple locations between Tasman and Tākaka. Drivers must expect lane closures and temporary speed restrictions at affected areas.

State Highway 6:

  • The highway is closed by flooding between Havelock and Rai Valley.
  • Drivers should delay their travel or use an alternative route when travelling between Marlborough and Nelson – via State Highway 63, St Arnaud.

Contractors are responding to multiple incidents across the network as they occur.

Drivers must obey road closures as they are there for your safety. Ignoring closures not only endangers you, but also those who may need to rescue you.

Please do not drive through floodwaters. Currents may be stronger than you expect, and floodwaters can hide unseen dangers. Bow waves from vehicles can also cause further damage to flooded properties.

While the weather warnings remain in place, it is important to stay up to date on road, weather, and Civil Defence information. Please avoid travelling if conditions are unsafe.

Update: 8am

Currently, State Highway 60 in Tākaka is closed by flooding at the Waitapu Bridge. With no detours available, this means there is no access between Tākaka and Collingwood.

Also on State Highway 60, there is localised flooding at the intersection of Riwaka-Kaiteriteri Road. A 30 km/h speed limit is in place.

Contractors have been dealing with slips and rockfalls across the region’s highways overnight. These, along with localised flooding, are expected to remain a risk as the wet weather continues

Drivers must take care on the roads and be prepared for hazards.

If the situation worsens further road closures are possible. It is essential people stay up to date on road, weather, and Civil Defence information, and avoid travel if conditions are unsafe:
