Ngā rereketanga – our diversity

At Waka Kotahi, we believe in the power of inclusion and diversity, and we’re committed to building an inclusive culture where everyone feels they belong. This means a place where we all feel valued, respected, and supported to be ourselves and thrive.

We also want to better reflect the diverse communities of Aotearoa New Zealand.

This will make Waka Kotahi an even better place to work, increase our innovation and creativity, and enhance relationships with our stakeholders, so that we can develop great transport solutions that meet the diverse needs of our communities.

In 2021 we developed our Diversity and Inclusion Roadmap which guides us in building a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.

Employee-led networks

Employee-led networks are an important part of our diversity and inclusion mahi as they help us to build a more inclusive culture. Our employee-led networks help our people to connect, support one another, share ideas and increase their sense of belonging.

Our employee-led networks currently include:

  • Wāhine Network (Women’s Network)
  • Rangitāmiro Māori Network
  • Pasifika Network
  • Pride Network
  • Neurodiversity Network.

We are committed to supporting employee-led networks and seeing them thrive.

Pay Gaps Action Plan

As part of our diversity, equity and inclusion mahi, Waka Kotahi is committed to addressing the drivers of gender, Māori, Pacific and ethnic pay gaps.  We want to identify and address any barriers that impact our people because of their gender or ethnicity. Kia Toipoto, our Pay Gaps Action Plan, is essential to this mahi.

We published our first Kia Toipoto Pay Gaps Action Plan in 2023 and we’re currently working on refreshing our action plan for 2024/25. Our action plan aligns with our values, and reflects our commitment to the Public Service Pay Gap Action Plan, Kia Toipoto.
