$836 million is forecast to be invested in Te Tai Tokerau (Northland’s) land transport system during the 2021–24 National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) period. This will help create a safe, resilient network to carry local dairy, forestry, farming and horticulture products to export markets.
Te Tai Tokerau – Northland NLTP 2023 update
The new Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway opened to the public in the early hours of 19 June. The new route provides a safer, more resilient and reliable route. It is a key strategic transport corridor for Aotearoa, connecting Tamaki Makaurau to Te Tai Tokerau.
Our commitment to environmental excellence has been recognised with the SH1 Mangamuka Gorge slip repairs project a finalist at this year’s IECA Australasia Environmental Excellence Awards.
Managing the effects on the environment and to wildlife around the site works are critical to the project team and our partners as the Maungataniwha Ranges are home to a diverse range of native and endangered flora and fauna.
Effective stormwater and sediment management plays a major role in protecting the environment through construction. Silt fencing, rainwater capture drains and sediment tanks have been installed to ensure any stormwater runoff is diverted, collected, with silt and other contaminants allowed to settle before it reaches the local waterways.
Stage one of the SH1 Loop Road safety improvements project has been completed with a single-lane roundabout at a previously unsafe and inefficient intersection.
SH1 Loop Road safety improvements
The SH10 Kaeo Bridge upgrade is underway and will see a new two-lane bridge and roundabout at the intersection of SH10 and Whangaroa Road to improve safety and traffic flow. We’re expecting to have the structure of the bridge finished by the end of 2023. The road and roundabout will open early 2024.
The SH1 Whangārei to Wellsford safety improvements project continues with additional flexible safety posts about to be installed north of the Port Marsden Road (SH15) roundabout to Springfield Road as an interim measure ahead of the SH1 Whangārei to Port Marsden Highway safety improvements project. South of the Brynderwyns a widened centre line north of Ross Road and a flexible median barrier around Topuni Corner will be installed. These works are all early works while we continue to plan and design further improvements along this corridor.
This programme of work includes multiple slip repairs on SH1 Mangamuka Gorge as well a long-term resilience planning for the Far North roading network in response to an August-2022 weather event which forced SH1 Mangamuka Gorge to close due to severe slips. Construction of the slip repairs has begun and a programme business case for long-term resilience is progressing. Repair work on 15 critical slips is underway. The road is expected to re-open in late 2024.
