Over the past few years, the NZ Transport Agency had been collaborating with the Timaru District Council and other stakeholder groups to reduce congestion and travel times along SH1 Evans Street by making this busy road two lanes in each direction. We had been doing this by changing the road markings and making other layout changes as we re-sealed worn-out sections of the road.
When we were ready to replace the road surface on Evans Street between Te Weka Street and Wai-Iti Road, we needed to extend the no-stopping restrictions (yellow lines) on both sides of the road to extend the 4-laning. Following consultation, on this and after careful consideration of all feedback received, the decision was made to proceed with the four-laning of this section of Evans Street and the removal of on-street parking using yellow line to allow for this.
On the southbound side of Evans Street, these changes will extend the existing dual lanes north of Te Weka Street, through this new section, to join with the existing dual lanes south of Wai-iti Road, easing this bottleneck. We will be adding yellow no-stopping lines from 31 Evans Street to 13 Evans Street.
On the northbound side of Evans Street, the dual lanes will be extended north from Beverley Road to merge into one lane prior to the bus stop outside 30 Evans Street, just before Trafalgar Street. This meant adding yellow no-stopping lines from 22 Evans Street (Comfort Hotel) to 28 Evans Street (The Coast Motel).
The no-stopping areas were shown on the map in the newsletter:
