Current consultations

We’re committed to a transparent and collaborative approach to our transport planning, policies and project delivery. We work closely with our partners and engage widely across all our activities with our  stakeholders and communities every day to share information and gain valuable insights.

Publicly notified consultations are a key way we gather feedback to help shape and inform our work.

Feedback or submission received in consultations will be deemed public information and may be published afterwards, but we will not publish information that identifies an individual person. As a government agency, we also have to respond to Official Information Act requests.

Silverdale Bus Priority Lane Bylaw

NZTA is proposing a new bus priority lane on State Highway 1 Silverdale (northbound), north of Auckland, to improve travel times and reliability for bus users. The new lane will serve as a wider emergency stopping lane and operate as a bus priority lane from 3pm–7pm, Monday to Friday. This requires an amendment to the Traffic Controls on State Highways Bylaw 2017-14. Public feedback is invited on the proposed changes.

Proposed geotechnical amendments to the Bridge Manual

We’re making amendments to the geotechnical sections of the NZTA Bridge Manual. The aim is to keep the geotechnical standards up to date and provide clarification to the design standards. The amendments are mostly on chapter 6: Site stability, foundations, earthworks and retaining walls. At this stage we are only seeking feedback from the geotechnical community (NZGS).

New urban connectors speed reviews proposing to keep lower speeds

NZTA has opened new speed reviews on several sections of state highway that are categorised as urban connectors, after community feedback that people would like to keep lower speeds in these locations. Under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 (the Rule), these sections are required to automatically reverse to their previous higher speed limit by 1 July 2025. These new speed reviews are proposing to change back to the lower speeds just after 1 July 2025.

SH2 Hutt Valley "No U-turn" signs

We're proposing to install “No U-turn” signs at eleven intersections along State Highway 2 in the Hutt Valley to improve road safety. These changes will be rolled out in two phases, starting with the most high-risk areas. We’re currently seeking public feedback on this proposal.

Asset Management Data Standard Provisional Release April 2025

We welcome feedback from Approved Organisations on the April 2025 AMDS provisional releases, including new standards for Survey Mark, Vehicle Crossing, and Road Status—alongside updates to existing standards and guidance to support national symbology alignment.

SH1 Dunedin safety improvements

We're working on a plan to make Dunedin’s SH1 one-way system safer, and are seeking feedback on several key safety improvements we are proposing along this highway corridor.

Dunedin SH1 Cumberland Street south - Duke Street intersection turning

With 9 crashes between 2019 and 2023, the Duke Street/SH1 Cumberland Street south has been identified as a safety concern. We are proposing to address this by only allowing left turns out of the intersection on to SH1 south and remove straight through vehicle movements across the highway - the main cause of crashes at this site. We welcome your feedback on this proposed change.

Land Transport Rule: Regulatory Systems Rule Amendment (RSRA) 2025

We are seeking feedback on a on a range of minor changes to 9 Land Transport Rules. Proposals include changes for heavy vehicles and vehicle dimensions and mass, vehicle brakes, steering systems, windscreen wipe and wash systems, and traffic control devices Rules. The purpose is to clarify the Rules and simplify legislation, reduce compliance costs, and improve safety.
